A case was filed against seven people, including Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, the chairman of Chambal Union Parishad in Chattogram’s Banshkhali and convener of union Awami League, on Monday on charge of threatening to beat up United States ambassador in Bangladesh Peter Haas.
International Human Rights Commission Bangladesh Chapter president MA Hashem Raju filed the case with the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury.
The other accused in the case are — Iftekhar Uddin Babu, Sajjad, Ehshan, Farhad, Nashir and Saiful, all residents of Chambal Union Parishad.
MA Hashem Raju said, ‘I have filed the case with the CMM court seeking legal measures against them for threatening the US ambassador.’
He said that the court recorded his statement and now he was waiting for the order from the court.
‘The US ambassador is trying to help the authorities concerned to hold free and fair elections in Bangladesh. The accused have threatened to kill him which is a criminal offence and violation of human rights.
According to the case petition, Mujibul Haque Chowdhury threatened the US ambassador Peter Haas in the presence and cooperation of all the accused in a public meeting in Banskhali on November 6.
‘He threatened to kill Peter Haas and made derogatory comments against him which were published in different newspapers on November 8,’
Besides, he also made derogatory remarks on US president Joe Biden and internationally renowned economist Professor Muhammed Yunus.
